Upchurch Associates has completed the design for phase 2 of Mast Quay, a dockside development in Woolwich, east London.
Working for Mast Quay Development Ltd, the plan features a collection of tall buildings with 218 apartments and 738 square metres of commercial space plus landscaping between the buildings and undercroft parking.
The site sits to the north of Woolwich Church Street about 800 metres north-west of Woolwich Arsenal train station with the previous three Mast Quay blocks standing on the western edge of the site.
It features two blocks, the first of which will have 14 storeys and 77 apartments plus a 450 square metre roof terrace on the podium with a café to take advantage of the space. The second one is taller at 22 storeys making it one of the tallest buildings in Woolwich, and will have office space and ten levels of residental space with the remaining 141 apartments.
The towers have been designed to fit in with the existing Mast Quay buildings and create the appearance of stepping up across the site from west to east with the 22 storey tower to be situated on the far east of the plot.
At the same time, this also breaks from the aesthetics of the older Mast Quay blocks with their red and white render that now look slightly dated thanks to their postmodern look although it retains other elements such as external corner balconies, a hint of orange near the bottom, and a similar curving roof.
The facades on the high-rise section of the taller building are intended to be clad in angled glass curtain walling that will partially overlap the edges of the tower and create the appearance of sail tying in with the nautical history of the area that is coming to influence the architectural future of Woolwich as much as its historical past.
