Real World Gods Empty
PostSubject: Real World Gods   Real World Gods I_icon_minitimeMon Mar 11, 2013 3:00 pm

Hi there! I recently bought New Gods of Mankind from Drivethrurpg.com and was rather impressed with what I saw. So much so I then went on to buy the rest of the available books for this game! Very Happy

Now, I'm not 100% sure which part of the forums I should be posting this so thought this place would be as good as any.

Does anyone know of any "real-world" God write-ups anywhere? Y'know: Zeus, Thor, Horus, Quetzalcoatl, Vishnu, etc. I was thinking of running a real-world game set some time in the Bronze age, but eventually working it's way through history possibly even up to present day!

Any pointers would be most helpful.

(Not even sure how active these forums are as the latest post here seems to be last year Sad )

Thanks and best regards.

Things are unfortunately very quiet here, yes. Razz

The core ideas of NGoM, however, are excellent. I first blundered around running a "the PCs are minor deities, of small tribes" game more than 20 years ago - but never came up with notions like conflict as a source of belief (and a way of stripping it from rival deities), that provide the active tension at the heart of NGoM. Every problem that arises for a deity's followers is both opportunity and threat: it's a wonderful way of making things matter to players as well as their characters.

And no, I don't think I've come across any 'real-world' write-ups. Most of the major human deities would far surpass NGoM ones, in terms of followers - one minor city-state in ancient Greece might provide a few thousand active worshippers; the Olympian Twelve (unless you divide up each one's followers into a host of local cults) would each have (at least) hundreds of 'units' in their service.

But it could be an interesting exercise, certainly. I'd strongly recommend that any models you use are from the oldest legends and cults - before Hecate has, for example, become a deity of magic, death, the underworld, travel, crossroads, ghosts, women, the moon, seasons (and various other things I'm sure I'm forgetting). In the evolution of the deities over time, you can see many of the processes that NGoM aims to model, of course.
