Lambeth Fire Station Set For Redevelopment

Published on 21-04-2010 by Skyscrapernews.com
One of the few buildings that hints at Lambeth's historic art deco past, the grade II listed London Fire Brigade Headquarters at 8 Albert Embankment, is set to get a makeover with new high-rise buildings built behind it on the southern side.

Coming from the pens of Liftschutz Davidson Sandilands, the project features the extension of the fire station and its conversion into a residential building with a new glass and steel upper floor added to the original section, something that has been supported by the planning officers at Lambeth Council. This will boost it to a total height of 11 floors above ground level.

Connected by a shared podium, the extensions have been designed to look aesthetically different from the Fire Station and thus clearly delineates between the old and the new and helps maintain the visual integrity of the listed building.

To the south of the site between Whitgift Street and Southbank House a new development is proposed of four buildings arranged around a shared podium with the north and south elements consisting of two towers of 16 and 13 floors with the taller clad in bronze metal sheeting.

If the project is approved then developer Albert Embankment LLP will be constructing 360 apartments, 328 of which are for the private housing market, plus 3,917 square metres of office space and 637 square metres of retail space.
