Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, probably best known for its infamous and possibly made up Black Hole is finally getting the skyscraper bug.
After spending years under a communist local government, most Kolkata developers have shied away from the spotlight in fear of being caught up in red tape several large projects are now being approved and slowly making their way skyward.
Possibly the most significant of these projects is a project by Shristi Infrastructure and InterContinental Hotels that will be named Vedic Hotels.
The project which has been designed by a group of international architects which include Delhi-based C.P. Kukreja Associates who are the principal architects along with Cervera & Pioz, Spain; King Roselli Architetti, Italy, and Ruben Anderegg, Switzerland, will consist of two 150 metre tall bullet shaped towers.
The towers will have glass, balconied facades that extend upwards to lipstick style peaks. Approximately half way up each of the towers several floors are given over to expansive green areas one of the many green features in the bio structures that Cervera & Pioz specialise in.
The taller of the towers will house a 5 star hotel equipped with all the little luxuries that have come to be expected such as pools, spas etc etc. The shorter will be a residential tower that will offer luxury living to residents and due to the towers location in the heart of the New Town Development will be in close proximity to a host of entertainment venues, restaurants, speciality shops and state of the art cinemas as well as other fun stuff.
Although the stone laying ceremony has taken place ground breaking as of yet is to take place, some encouraging signs of site preparation have been noticed so when the towers will be complete is anyone's guess but its rumoured the hotel will start to take customers by the end of 2008 whether they will have beds or even rooms to sleep in remains to be seen
